A back foot punch is a vertical bat shot played off the rear leg. The batsman shifts their weight backward as the short ball reaches their body. They hit the ball with a straight bat using a punching motion. This shot usually sends the ball through the off side fielding area. It requires excellent timing and a very high level of hand-eye coordination. The player must rise high on their toes to control the bouncing ball. This stroke allows the batsman to use the pace of the bowler effectively. A player punches a short ball through the covers for four runs. Keeping the elbows high ensures the ball stays down on the ground level. Proper balance on the back foot prevents the player from falling over sideways.
