Vertical bat shot describes any stroke where the bat is held upright pointing toward the sky or ground. This technique uses the full length of the wooden blade to defend or hit the cricket ball. It is the safest way to play because it covers the most area in front of the stumps. Batters use this for defensive blocks and for driving the ball straight down the entire pitch. A batter played a vertical bat shot and the ball traveled straight back toward the long boundary. This alignment minimizes the chance of the ball hitting the thin edge of the wooden bat. Most professional innings begin with these types of shots to build confidence and ensure a safe start. Keeping the elbow high and the head still are essential for maintaining this straight bat path. It remains the foundation of classical cricket technique taught to every beginner in the world.
