An assist tackle occurs when two or more defenders help bring down a ball carrier. The stat credits each defender involved. This term matters because football relies on teamwork. Few tackles happen completely alone. Teams encourage defenders to swarm the ball. Hustle and pursuit increase assist tackles. Also, they limit extra yards after contact. For example, one defender slows the runner. Another defender finishes the tackle, and both earn credit.
