Side Step Meaning in Basketball

A side step is a lateral movement used to create space for an open shot. The player bounces the ball once and hops to the left or the right side. This horizontal shift forces the defender to react and move their feet to stay close. It differs from a step-back because the player moves strictly sideways rather than retreating backward. The move allows the shooter to avoid a contest from a defender’s outstretched arms. Quick footwork and body control are necessary to remain balanced for the subsequent jump shot. A shooter might side step a closing defender to find a clear path to the hoop. Precise landing ensures the player stays behind the three-point line for maximum scoring.
