The C gap describes the space outside the tackle and inside the tight end or edge. If no tight end exists, it sits outside the tackle. This gap matters because many runs attack it. Defenses assign players to control this area. Edge defenders and linebackers play key roles. Offenses stretch plays toward the C gap. Proper leverage prevents cutbacks. Gap control stops explosive runs. For example, a runner bounces outside and hits the C gap for a gain.
