An envelope refers to a circular blade movement that captures the opponent’s weapon. This action starts by making contact with the steel of the other person’s blade. The fencer then guides the opposing tip in a complete circle without losing contact. This movement ends in the same line or position where the contact first began. Fencers use this technique to move the opposing blade out of the scoring path. It creates a clear opening for a clean hit on the opponent’s body. One competitor may trap a straight lunge by using this circular sweeping motion. This defensive maneuver requires a relaxed wrist to maintain constant pressure on the steel. Constant blade contact prevents the opponent from disengaging or pulling the weapon back. A fencer often follows this action with a quick thrust into the target. The technique works best against opponents who keep a very stiff or rigid arm. It serves as a strong setup for a counter-offensive strike during a match.
