A yellow card in football is a caution shown by the referee to a player who commits an actionable offence as defined by the Laws of the Game, such as unsporting behavior, dissent by word or action, persistent fouling, delaying the restart of play, or failing to respect the required distance during restarts.
When a player receives a yellow card, their name and team details are recorded by the referee, but the player may continue to play in the match. If a player receives a second yellow card in the same match, they are shown a red card and are sent off, meaning they must leave the field and cannot be replaced, reducing their team to ten players.
Yellow cards help referees maintain discipline and encourage fair play by penalizing behavior that disrupts the flow of the game or gives a team an unfair advantage.
