A red card in football signals that a player has committed a serious offence under the Laws of the Game and must leave the field of play immediately, cannot return, and cannot be replaced by a substitute, forcing the team to play with one fewer player.
Common reasons for a red card include violent conduct, serious foul play that endangers an opponent, using offensive or abusive language or gestures, and denying an obvious goal‑scoring opportunity either by a foul or handball, and receiving a second yellow card in the same match also results in a red card and dismissal, making it one of the most severe disciplinary actions in the sport.
