Overlap Meaning in Football

An overlap in football is an attacking movement where a player, often a full‑back, runs around the outside of a teammate who has the ball to provide an additional passing option or stretch the defense, forcing defenders to make a choice between staying with the ball‑carrier or tracking the overlapping runner, which can open space for crosses, cutbacks, or advanced entries into the attacking third.
