In Soft Tennis, a Wide Serve is a tactical serve in which a player directs the ball toward the far sidelines of the service box. This forces the receiver to move horizontally away from the center of the court.
Because Soft Tennis uses a light, flexible rubber ball and a lighter racket, players can generate extreme angles and bounce patterns that make this serve particularly effective.
How the Wide Serve Works
- The Target: The server aims for the “outer corner” of the service box, near the junction of the sideline and the service line.
- The Spin: Players usually apply heavy slice or sidespin. This causes the ball to curve in the air and “kick” even further outward after it hits the ground.
- The Goal: The primary objective is to pull the opponent off the court, leaving a large open space for the server’s next shot.
Why is there a Wide Serve
- Creating Gaps: By forcing the receiver wide, the server opens up the “down-the-line” or “cross-court” passing lanes.
- Neutralizing Power: It is harder for a receiver to hit a powerful return when they are lunging or stretching at full reach.
- Setting up the Net Player: In doubles, a wide serve often forces a weak, floating return that the server’s partner can easily “poach” at the net for a winner.
Key Differences from Regular Tennis
- The Ball: The inflatable rubber ball used in Soft Tennis is more sensitive to wind and spin. A wide serve can “grab” the court surface. I can also bounce at a much sharper angle than a felt-covered yellow tennis ball.
- The Equipment: Soft Tennis rackets are designed for maneuverability. This allows servers to snap their wrists more easily to create the necessary angle for a wide serve.
Strategic Outcomes
| Result | Description |
| The Ace | The ball is placed so far wide that the receiver cannot touch it. |
| The Forced Error | The receiver reaches the ball but cannot control the return, hitting it into the net or out of bounds. |
| The Open Court | The receiver returns the ball, but they are stuck out of position, allowing the server to hit an easy winner into the empty space. |
