A leg cutter is a fast delivery where the bowler rolls their fingers down the side of the ball to make it spin away from a right-handed batter. It combines the speed of a fast bowler with the movement of a spinner, making the ball grip the surface and change direction suddenly.
Example: The bowler used a sharp leg cutter on the dry pitch to find an edge and dismiss the set batter.
Pro-Tip: Leg cutters are most effective on pitches that are ‘sticky’ or have cracks in them. The variation in speed and the sideways movement make it very difficult for a batter to drive the ball straight back down the ground with confidence.
