Bat Pad Catch Meaning in Cricket

A bat pad catch occurs when the ball strikes the bat and then the batter’s leg guards (pads) before popping up into the air for a fielder to grab. This type of dismissal is very common against spin bowlers when a fielder is standing in a very close position, like ‘short leg’ or ‘silly mid-off.’ Example: The spinner was delighted when the ball took a thick inside edge and resulted in a simple bat pad catch for the fielder.

Pro-Tip: Batters hate this dismissal because it often feels unlucky, but it is actually the result of great pressure from the bowler and sharp reflexes from the fielder. To avoid this, batters try to keep their bat and pad close together or use their feet to reach the ball before it can bounce and pop up.
