A bowling spell is a continuous period during which a single bowler delivers a series of overs from one end of the pitch. A captain will usually keep a bowler on for a ‘spell’ of four to eight overs before resting them to bring on a fresh teammate with a different style. Example: The star fast bowler took three wickets during an inspired six-over bowling spell that completely broke the opposition’s top order.
Pro-Tip: Managing spells is a key part of cricket captaincy to ensure that fast bowlers don’t become too exhausted to maintain their top speed. A bowler is often brought back for a second or third spell later in the day when the ball is older or the batters are tired.
