An overcut is the opposite of an undercut strategy. A driver stays out longer than a rival. He continues on older tires. Meanwhile the rival pits for fresh tires. If the older tires still perform well the driver gains time. Clear track often helps this plan succeed. For example a driver sets fast laps before stopping. His rival struggles with traffic after pitting. When the first driver finally pits he exits ahead. Tire management is essential here. Staying out too long causes time loss. Teams monitor lap times closely before committing. The overcut rewards patience and smooth driving.
