Formation lap happens before the race officially starts. Drivers leave the grid and drive one full lap. They warm up tires and brakes. Weaving helps build tire temperature. Brakes must reach working heat. For example drivers accelerate and brake repeatedly. They prepare for maximum grip at the start. After the lap they return to grid spots. Engines idle as lights prepare to go out. The formation lap also checks car condition. Any issue can force a pit lane start. This lap builds tension before racing begins. A good warm up improves launch performance.
