A hot lap is any lap driven at maximum speed. Drivers use the term informally over the radio. It usually refers to a qualifying attempt. The goal is to set the fastest possible time. Tires must be in peak condition. Focus is intense from start to finish. For example a driver says he is starting a hot lap. Engineers clear traffic ahead if possible. He pushes flat out through straights and corners. One lock up can cost several tenths. Hot laps demand bravery and control. They often decide starting positions.
