A technical knockout occurs when the referee stops the fight for safety reasons. The boxer may still stand, but cannot defend properly. The referee, doctor, or corner can make this decision. Excessive damage often leads to a stoppage. Continuous unanswered punches also trigger it. For example, the referee stopped the fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in their second bout. Fury dominated with repeated heavy shots. Wilder remained standing but absorbed too much punishment. A technical knockout protects long term health. It prevents unnecessary harm. Although the fight does not reach a ten count, it still counts as a win. Safety always comes first in boxing.
