A second serve is the server’s final chance after missing the first serve. This serve must land in or the point is lost. Players usually reduce speed to improve accuracy. They often add spin to keep the ball safe. The goal is to avoid a double fault. For example, a player misses a powerful first serve. Then they hit a slower second serve with heavy spin. The ball lands safely and the rally begins. A dependable second serve protects against free points.
