The baseline is the back line of the tennis court. It runs parallel to the net. Players often stand near it during rallies. Most groundstrokes are hit from this area. It marks the boundary for serves and deep shots. If the ball lands beyond it, the shot is out.
The baseline also defines the serving position. For example, a player trades powerful shots from behind the baseline. Both aim deep to push the other back. Baseline play rewards consistency and strong footwork.
