A forced error happens when a player misses because of pressure from the opponent. The opponent hits a strong or well placed shot. This makes the return difficult to control. The player may stretch, run, or react late. As a result, the ball goes out or into the net. Unlike unforced errors, these mistakes come from effective play. Forced errors reflect smart attacking strategy. For example, a player hits a deep shot into the corner. The opponent reaches but cannot control the reply. The ball sails wide. The pressure created the error. Forced errors reward aggressive and precise shots.
