Approach Shot Meaning in Tennis

An approach shot is a shot hit to move forward toward the net. The player follows it into an attacking position. This shot is usually deep and controlled. It forces the opponent into a defensive reply. After hitting it, the player prepares for a volley.

The goal is to finish at the net. For example, a player hits a deep slice to the backhand side. They quickly advance toward the net. The opponent returns weakly. The player volleys for the winner. Approach shots build smart offensive pressure.
