Love means zero in tennis scoring. When a player has not won a point in a game, their score is love. The term applies only to points, not games or sets. Players announce scores like 15-love or love-30. It simply replaces the word zero. Love does not carry positive meaning here. It only marks no points won. For example, a server loses the first point of a game. The score becomes love-15. The game continues from that starting position. Love is the basic starting score in every game.
