Retirement happens when a player stops playing during a match. This usually occurs because of injury or illness. The match has already started. If a player cannot continue, the opponent wins. The final score reflects the games completed. Retirement differs from a walkover before play begins. For example, a player injures their ankle in the second set. They inform the umpire they cannot continue. The opponent is declared the winner. That result is recorded as a retirement.
