Net Cord Meaning in Tennis

A net cord is the top band that runs along the net. It stretches tightly from one post to the other. The ball can strike the net cord during play. Sometimes the ball clips it and falls over. This often creates an unexpected point. Players call this a lucky net cord. However the point still counts. The net cord helps keep the net stable. It also sets the correct net height. For example a shot may barely touch the top band. The ball then drops just inside the opponent’s court. Such moments can shift momentum quickly. The net cord plays a small but noticeable role.
