Breakback occurs when a player wins a game immediately after being broken. First, the opponent wins a service game unexpectedly.
Then the original server responds by breaking the serve in return. This action restores balance in the set. It prevents the opponent from extending the lead. Momentum often swings quickly after a break back. For example, a player loses serve at 3-3. The score becomes 4-3 against them. In the next game, they attack aggressively and win. The set returns to 4-4. Breaking back keeps matches competitive.
