A forced volley is a shot hit at the net where the opponent’s power or placement leaves the player with no choice but to react. Unlike a standard volley where the player is in control, this shot is a desperate attempt to stay in the point. Usually, the ball is hit very hard at the player’s body or aimed low at their feet. The player must use quick reflexes to just get the racquet in the way and block the ball back. These shots often result in a weak return that the opponent can easily attack again. It is a sign that the person at the net is under intense pressure from the baseline. For example, a player might hit a powerful passing shot directly at an opponent standing at the net, causing a forced volley. The net player barely manages to touch the ball, but it falls short and loses the point. This tactic is used to break down players who are very comfortable at the front of the court. It tests their hands and balance.
