Average rally length is a statistic that tracks the average number of times the ball crosses the net during a point. It tells you a lot about the playing styles and the court surface, as points on grass are usually short while points on clay are long.
Most professional points last between zero and four shots, meaning the serve and return are the most important moments. A high average rally length shows that both players are playing defensively and waiting for the other to make a mistake. For example, a match between two counterpunchers might have an average rally length of eight shots per point.
This measurement helps coaches understand if a player is ending points too quickly or getting dragged into long, tiring battles. It is a key indicator of the physical intensity of a match.
