A ball can is a pressurized container used to store and protect tennis balls. Most cans hold three or four balls in a tight vertical stack. The tube is sealed with a metal or plastic lid to keep the internal air pressure high.
This pressure matches the air inside the balls to prevent them from going flat before use. When you pull the metal tab, you will hear a distinct popping hiss of air escaping. This sound is a favorite for players because it means the balls are fresh and bouncy.
For example, a player grabs a new ball from their bag before starting a competitive league match. They pop the top to ensure the balls have the maximum bounce for the first set. Most cans are made of clear plastic, so you can easily see the condition of the felt inside. Once opened, the balls begin to lose their pressure slowly over several days.
Professional tournaments use hundreds of these cans to keep the equipment consistent. It is the best way to guarantee a fair game.
