A backspin serve is a specialty serve where the player hits under the ball to create reverse rotation. This spin causes the ball to stay very low or even bounce backward toward the net after it lands. It is a rare and tricky serve that can catch an opponent completely by surprise.
Because the ball does not travel very fast, it relies entirely on the strange bounce to win the point. For example, a player uses a backspin serve that barely clears the net and then dies on the ground. The receiver runs forward, but the ball stays so low that they cannot get their racket under it.
This serve is often used as a ‘junk’ shot to break the rhythm of a match or as a fun trick. It is difficult to master because you must swing with a very flat, horizontal motion across the bottom of the ball. While not common in professional play, it can be a hilarious and effective tool in casual games. It proves that spin can be just as dangerous as speed.
