The player box is a reserved seating area in the stands for a player’s team. It is located very close to the court, often right behind the player’s bench. This is where the coach, family members, and physical trainers sit during a match.
The athlete often looks to this box for emotional support or a quick boost of confidence. Coaches are now allowed to give limited instructions from this area in most professional matches. For example, a player fist-pumps toward their player box after winning a very long and difficult point. Their coach stands up to cheer and offer a few words of encouragement.
The energy in the box can often reflect the intensity of the match on the court. It is a private bubble of support in a stadium filled with thousands of strangers. Television cameras frequently show the reactions of the people in the box during big moments. It highlights the teamwork that goes into an individual sport like tennis. This area is strictly off-limits to regular fans.
