Object Ball Meaning in Billiards

An object ball is any ball the player tries to hit or pocket. It is not the white cue ball. Each game assigns object balls differently. Some games use stripes and solids. Others use numbered balls in order. Players must contact the correct object ball first. Doing this keeps the shot legal. For example, in 8-ball, a player with solids must hit a solid ball first. If the wrong ball is struck first, it counts as a foul. Understanding object balls keeps the game fair and organized.
