Chalk Meaning in Billiards

Chalk is a powder players apply to the tip of the cue stick. It increases friction between the tip and the cue ball. This helps prevent slipping during contact. Players chalk before many shots. It improves control, especially when using spin. For example, a player rubs blue chalk on the cue tip before a draw shot. Proper chalk use reduces mistakes and mis-hits.
