The tip is the small leather piece at the very end of the cue stick. It is the only part that touches the cue ball. Because of that, it controls spin, speed, and accuracy. A soft tip grips the ball more. A harder tip feels firmer and lasts longer. Players shape and maintain the tip carefully. They also apply chalk to prevent slipping. For example, a player strikes low on the cue ball for a draw shot. The tip grips the ball and creates backward spin. A well-kept tip gives better control on every shot.
