A break and run happens when a player wins the game in their first turn. It starts with the opening break shot that scatters the balls. The player must pocket at least one ball on that initial hit. They then proceed to sink every remaining ball without missing once.
This means the opponent never gets a chance to strike a ball. It is the ultimate display of skill and ball control in pool. Completing this feat requires planning several shots to maintain the perfect position. Most professional matches feature several of these high-level plays.
For example, a player breaks the balls and then pockets all seven solids and the eight ball. This win is recorded as a break and run on the scorecard. It is a demoralizing event for the player sitting in the chair. Mastering this skill is the goal of every serious billiards student.
