Carom billiards refers to games played on a rectangular table that has no pockets at all. The name comes from the word carom, which means to hit and bounce off something. The game typically uses only three balls: one red, one white, and one yellow. Instead of sinking balls into holes, you score by hitting both of the other balls. This style of play focuses heavily on the movement and paths of the balls across the felt. It is a game of pure geometry and refined finesse rather than target practice. You must master the use of side spin and rail bounces to be successful in this sport. For example, a player strikes the white cue ball so it hits the red ball and then the yellow. This successful contact results in one point and allows the player to continue their turn. It is very popular in Europe, Asia, and South America among serious enthusiasts. This classic form of the sport emphasizes the beautiful, flowing motion of the balls.
