A burst occurs when a player exceeds a specific point limit in certain games. This term is most commonly used in games like forty-one, where you have a secret target score. If your total points go over the limit, your score resets, or you are eliminated from the round.
It adds a layer of math and strategy to what would otherwise be a simple shooting game. You must be careful not to pocket balls that will put you over your intended goal. This keeps the game exciting because the leader can lose their advantage in a single shot.
For example, a player has thirty-nine points and only needs two more to win the match. They accidentally sink a five ball and burst their score by going over forty-one. This mistake forces them to start over from zero while their friends keep playing. It is a fun and high-stakes rule for social billiards games.
