A carom table is a specialized billiards table that has no pockets. It is used for games like three-cushion and straight rail, where the goal is to hit balls off each other. These tables are often larger than standard pool tables and feature a heated slate bed to make the balls roll faster. The absence of holes means the game is entirely focused on geometry, angles, and rail bounces. The cushions on a carom table are also shaped differently to provide a more lively and predictable rebound. For example, a player practices their three-cushion shots on a carom table to master the physics of rail-to-rail movement. This style of table is most popular in Europe, Asia, and parts of South America. It represents the ‘purest’ form of billiards where pocketing is not an option. Playing on one requires a very different mindset than standard pool.
