A cue ball foul is an illegal move involving the white ball. This happens if you touch the cue ball with your hand, or if it goes into a pocket (a scratch). In most games, this gives your opponent ‘ball-in-hand,’ meaning they can place the white ball anywhere to start their turn. It is the most common penalty in pool. For example, a player accidentally touches the cue ball with their sleeve while reaching for a shot. This cue ball foul ends their turn and gives the opponent a massive advantage. Mastering your physical control is the best way to avoid these costly mistakes.
