A defensive shot is a move intended to leave the opponent with no easy way to score. Instead of trying to sink a ball, you focus on hiding the cue ball behind obstacles. This is often called ‘playing a safety’ and is a key part of winning strategy. The goal is to force your opponent into making a mistake or committing a foul. For example, a player gently nudges the cue ball behind a cluster of stripes so the opponent can’t see the eight ball. This defensive shot shifts the pressure and can turn a losing game into a winning one. It is the ‘chess’ aspect of billiards that rewards patience over aggression.
