Falling refers to the exact moment a ball drops over the edge and into a pocket. This is the ultimate goal of most offensive shots in games like pool or snooker. You want to see the ball falling cleanly into the center of the hole for a score. For example, the crowd cheers as the nine-ball is finally falling into the corner to end the match. The speed at which a ball is moving as it begins falling can affect its success. A slow-moving ball has a better chance of falling even if it grazes the side of the pocket. If a ball is moving too fast, it might rattle against the jaws instead of falling in. You can also use the term to describe the cue ball accidentally falling into a pocket. This is called a scratch and usually results in a penalty or a foul for the shooter. Watching a ball falling into the pocket is a very satisfying and rewarding part of playing. It confirms that your aim and power were correct for that specific layout.
