A domestique is a team rider whose primary job is to help their team leader win. The name comes from the French word for servant, reflecting their selfless role in the race. Domestiques do the hard work, like carrying water bottles and shielding the leader from the wind.
They will often drop back to the team car to collect food for their teammates. If the leader has a mechanical problem, a domestique might even give up their own bike to help. Their success is measured by the team’s victory rather than their own individual results. Without these hardworking riders, no great champion could ever win a major tour.
They are the unsung heroes who sacrifice their own glory for the good of the team. For example, a domestique rides at the front of the pack for fifty miles to keep the pace high for their leader. This effort allows the leader to stay fresh for the final sprint at the end of the day. They are the backbone of professional racing.
