Embrocation is a warming ointment or cream that cyclists rub onto their legs before a ride. It is primarily used in cold or wet weather to keep the muscles feeling warm and flexible. The cream creates a protective barrier against rain and wind, preventing a deep chill from setting in. Most versions contain ingredients like capsicum that cause a heating sensation when they touch the skin. It also gives the legs a shiny, professional look that many traditionalists appreciate. You should be careful not to touch your eyes or face after applying it, as it can sting quite a bit. There are different strengths available, ranging from “mild” for cool days to “hot” for freezing conditions. For example, a racer applies a layer of medium-heat embrocation before a muddy cyclocross race in October. The cream keeps their legs from seizing up in the cold mud and makes cleaning off after the race much easier. It is a classic ritual for winter riding.
