A field sprint is a high-speed dash for the finish line involving the majority of the racing group. This happens when no one has successfully escaped in a breakaway before the end. The entire pack, or field, reaches the final straightaway together at incredible speeds. Teams will form long lead-out trains to protect their best sprinter until the very last moment. It is a very loud and crowded experience with riders bumping shoulders for the best position. Sprinters use their maximum power to lunge their bikes across the line in the final seconds. Winning a field sprint requires a perfect mix of bravery, timing, and raw leg strength. It is often the most televised and exciting part of a flat road race. For example, the entire group of one hundred riders enters the final city street together for a field sprint. The fastest rider explodes from the group to win by half a wheel length. It is a pure test of velocity.
