Gap Jump Meaning in Cycling

A gap jump is a type of mountain bike jump where there is a space or “gap” between the takeoff and the landing. Unlike a tabletop jump, the middle section is hollow or contains a dangerous obstacle like rocks or a ditch. This means the rider must successfully clear the entire distance to avoid a crash. It requires good speed control and a high level of confidence to master safely. Beginners should practice on smaller jumps before attempting a gap. For example, a mountain biker approaches a six-foot gap jump with enough speed to sail over the middle gap and land smoothly on the dirt ramp. This maneuver allows them to maintain their flow through a technical section of the trail. It is a thrilling but high-stakes feature of off-road riding.
