Gnarly Meaning in Cycling

Gnarly is a slang term used to describe a trail or obstacle that is extremely difficult, dangerous, or rough. It is most commonly used by mountain bikers when talking about steep rock gardens, massive jumps, or slippery roots. A gnarly section of trail requires high-level skills and total focus to navigate without crashing. The term can also be used to describe a bad crash or very intense weather conditions. When a rider says a trail is “totally gnarly,” it is often a sign of both respect and warning. It represents the most extreme and challenging side of the sport. For example, a mountain biker looks at a steep, vertical drop filled with loose rocks and describes it as gnarly. They take a deep breath and use all their technical skill to navigate the obstacle safely. It is the language of extreme adventure.
