A huck is a slang term in mountain biking that refers to jumping off a large drop or feature. It usually implies a leap where the rider lacks a smooth transition or landing area. This move is common in freeride and downhill cycling, where riders seek out natural cliffs or man-made ramps.
Hucking requires significant confidence and the ability to absorb a heavy impact upon landing. For example, a rider might huck off a tall rock ledge into a patch of soft dirt below. While it looks spectacular, hucking puts extreme stress on both the bike frame and the suspension.
You must keep your body centered and let the bike move beneath you to land safely. It is often done for the thrill or to clear a section of trail that cannot be ridden. Beginners should start with small curbs before attempting to huck off larger obstacles. Proper technique prevents the dreaded flat landing that can break wheels or cause crashes.
