Mineral oil is a type of hydraulic fluid used in many high-end bicycle braking systems. It acts as the medium that transfers the pressure from your hand to the brake pads. Companies like Shimano and Magura use this specific oil because it is non-corrosive and safe for paint. Unlike automotive brake fluid, mineral oil does not absorb water from the air over time. This quality ensures that your brakes stay consistent and reliable during long and hot descents. For example, a mountain biker depends on mineral oil to provide stopping power on a steep hill. It is very important to only use the specific oil recommended by your brake manufacturer for safety. Mixing different types of fluids can damage the rubber seals inside your braking system and cause failure. I find mineral oil to be much easier to work with during maintenance because it is less toxic. You still need to bleed the system occasionally to remove any tiny bubbles of trapped air. Keeping your fluid fresh ensures that your levers always feel firm and responsive under your fingers.
