A Monument is one of the five oldest and most prestigious one-day races in cycling. These events are famous for their extreme distance, difficult terrain, and very long histories. They are the hardest races to win outside of the three-week Grand Tours on the calendar.
The five Monuments are Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and the Tour of Lombardy. For example, Paris-Roubaix is known as the Hell of the North because of its brutal cobblestone roads. Each race has a unique character that requires a specific type of physical and mental strength.
Only the toughest athletes can survive the wind, the mud, and the constant attacks from rivals. Fans gather by the thousands to watch the world’s best specialists fight for a place in history. These are the crown jewels of the international racing season.
