Musette Meaning in Cycling

A musette is a small and lightweight cotton bag used to deliver food to riders. Team assistants stand in a designated feed zone and hold the bag by its strap. As the cyclist rides past at high speed, they snag the bag over their shoulder. Inside, the rider finds essential items like energy bars, gels, and fresh water bottles. For example, a pro rider will quickly grab a musette while racing through a flat valley. Once they empty the contents into their jersey pockets, they discard the empty bag. These bags often feature team logos and become popular souvenirs for fans standing on the road. I find the hand-off of a musette to be a very impressive display of coordination. It allows the athletes to refuel without stopping or losing their position in the main group. The strap is designed to be thin so it does not interfere with the rider. It is a simple but vital part of the logistics behind a long race.
