A pannier is a sturdy bag designed to attach to a rack on a bicycle. These bags usually sit over the rear wheel or beside the front fork. Unlike backpacks, panniers keep the weight off your body and lower the bike’s center of gravity.
This makes carrying heavy loads much more comfortable and stable for the rider. Most panniers are waterproof to protect clothes, laptops, or groceries from the weather. They use simple clips to snap onto the metal rails of a bike rack.
You can easily remove them when you reach your destination. For example, a bicycle tourist might pack two large panniers with camping gear for a week-long trip. Commuters also use them to avoid getting a sweaty back while riding to the office. They come in various sizes to suit different storage needs. Using panniers transforms a simple bike into a powerful hauling machine.
